​General Accountabilities

  • Act as a project leader / senior project manager for Kinectrics dealing with protection and control, specifically IEC 61850 network applications, integration and other network security in the power industry.
  • Act as technical advisor to the Department Manager and identify areas of opportunity to increase revenue and profit in the area of protection and control.
  • Plan and develop major business proposals for work in the area of network applications, network security, and implementation of IEC 61850 in substations.
  • Supervise staff who participate in complex multidisciplinary projects.  
  • Consult with staff, in conjunction with the Department Manager/General Manager, on the strategy or plan to respond to a customer’s complex problems.
  • Execution of work assignments including development of in-house testing tools for IEC 61850, specifying, configuring and managing network equipment.
  • Keep informed on the latest issues in the area of protection and control.  Keep abreast of changing government regulations and standards regarding network security in the power industry (e.g. NERC security requirements, PMU’s).
  • Be involved with industry working groups to network, learn and contribute to developments in the area of 61850 and network security.

Selection Criteria

Essential Competencies:

  • Initiative to propose and implement new business ideas in the area of protection and control and specifically IEC 61850 network applications, integration and security.
  • Ability to work in a team situation and mentor staff to develop their own level of expertise in this area.
  • Considerable knowledge and experience in project management acquired over the years in order to effectively and rapidly coordinate/mentor/supervise/lead other staff at Kinectrics and customer sites in order to integrate large multidisciplinary high profile/key projects/activities.
  • Must have up to date knowledge and experience in project management methodologies and tools.
  • Proven computer skills with a variety of software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong track record of preparing and presenting technical proposals to industrial/commercial clients.
  • Experience in business development, marketing, and sales an asset.

Essential Knowledge, Experience and Qualifications:

  • A four-year university education in Electrical Engineering with specialized courses in power system studies, Protection & Control (P&C) and communications or the equivalent.
  • Extensive experience and knowledge in specifying, configuring, testing and managing P&C equipment and systems.
  • Practical knowledge/experience in developing/using testing tools for P&C and Substation Automation Systems (SAS) applications.
  • Extensive knowledge of regulations and standards regarding network security in the power industry  
  • Demonstrated experience in the areas of, but not limited to, P&C, 61850-based SAS and Synchrophasors / Phasor Measurement Units (PMU).
  • Recognized in industry as an expert in P&C equipment, 61850 and SAS
  • A period of at least 12 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
