​General Accountabilities

  • Team with Project Managers as well as lead your own projects dealing with all aspects of Transmission Protection and Control (P&C)
  • Specific experience and interest in the evaluation of existing and new P&C equipment, test, evaluation and application of IEC 61850 substation equipment; system studies and the relationship between system performance and P&C equipment and settings. Further, skills in communication network security will also be recognized.
  • Work independently and as part of engineering and technical teams to perform engineering consulting services related to electrical protection and control.
  • Develop proposals for internal and external customers.
  • Act as a technical support for other Department Engineers and Department Manager.
    Provide guidance and instruction to technical staff.
  • Assist in the negotiation and administration of contracts, including cost estimates, schedule, and resources required.
  • Carry out customers’ work and prepare reports with recommendations based on results achieved.
    Assist in marketing/selling the technology/services of the business to ensure P&C area remains viable and competitive.
  • Participate in workshops and conferences and present high quality articles for presentation and publication.
  • Maintain expertise in the field of protection and control, 61850 and network security.
  • Be involved with various committees (IEEE PSRC, UCA User group, CIGRE, IEC, etc.) where appropriate for the purpose of technical development, marketing and contributing to the advancement of the industry.

Selection Criteria

Essential Competencies:

  • Strong initiative to identify opportunities where Kinectrics engineering teams can contribute to protection and control; implement new business, and obtain revenue projects.
  • General knowledge of power distribution and transmission system planning, analysis and design.
  • General knowledge of the inter-connected power grid.
  • Flexibility to work in a wide array of technical topics related to transmission and distribution
    Engineering
  • Strong customer focus and ability to successfully develop new business with Canadian and US power utilities and successor and non-successor OH companies.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team situation with technical and engineering staff.
  • Ability to manage time and budgets on Kinectrics projects and to work on multiple projects in parallel.
  • Knowledge in project management methodologies and tools.
  • Proven skills with a variety of software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be willing and able to travel both nationally and internationally.

Essential Knowledge, Experience and Qualifications:

  • A four-year university education in electrical engineering (preferably a Masters degree in Engineering)
  • Knowledge in past and future protection and control philosophy and design with practical experience - including IEC61850.
  • Specialized knowledge in the area of power system protection including relays, breakers, reclosers and fuses. An understanding of the capabilities of past, present and future protection equipment.
  • Advanced knowledge of protective relaying design and testing with application in power utilities.
  • In addition, knowledge of specific OEM equipment will be an advantage. Further, experience in using a Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) would be invaluable.
  • A period of at least 6 to 10 years work experience is considered necessary to gain this experience.  Field experience is an asset.
