Overview 

As a technical specialist conduct or direct investigations and technical studies in one or more technical disciplines with some degree of independence.  The degree of independence will vary based on experience. This may include a limited amount of dealing with customers to solve problems, respond to inquiries and maintain good relations.  A strong technical background is required in order to be rapidly brought up to performance standards in a number of areas.  The initial assignment will be in the Analytical Waste Services Department with emphasis in the radiochemistry area.
 

General Duties

 
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner in compliance with Kinectrics policies and procedures.
  • Participate in investigations and technical studies for customers in one or more areas such as radiochemical characterization, complex sample preparations and chemical analysis and data processing.
  •  Perform laboratory and field investigations; provide support in laboratory or field environments by conducting experiments, conducting tests or servicing equipment; quality control.
  • Perform operations for the processing of radiochemical waste with guidance from experienced staff
  • Assist in the design, fabrication and maintenance of equipment, processes, systems and develop test methods.
  • Prepare routine and non routine technical reports
  • Prepare Technical Work Instructions
  • Respond to customer inquiries, maintain good customer relations and solve problems with the assistance of professional staff.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction by following good quality and safety practices in all aspects of work performed. Maintain quality records.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 Essential Skill, Experience and Qualifications

  • Completion of a University undergraduate degree in chemistry, biochemistry or related/equivalent programs. Additional specialized courses in the area of radiochemistry and radiation safety would be a definite asset.
  • Requires knowledge of inorganic and organic chemistry (especially inorganic) with emphasis on those aspects which allow for the dissolution of many types of samples and the separation and preconcentration of selected species.
  • Requires experience in sample processing which follows strict quality requirements and a high degree of precision and accuracy.
  • Requires experience with advanced chemical instrumentation using a high degree of automation and computer control.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in analytical laboratory
  • Incumbents are regarded as experienced employees in a specific field or discipline and have extensive knowledge in related fields.
  • Experience in computer applications across a number of technical fields.
  • Ability to work effectively both alone and in teams both in the lab and in the field.
  • Strong written (technical and non-technical) and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in solving complex problems where solutions require considerable investigation to resolve and often require integration of a number of technical fields.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and resourcefulness in resolving technical problems.
  • Desirable to have in-depth knowledge of radiochemical processing techniques and relevant instrumentation such as gamma counters, liquid scintillation counters, alpha detectors, various monitoring instruments and their maintenance and troubleshooting.
