Alpha Dosimetry Laboratory

The Kinectrics Alpha Dosimetry Lab has commenced operations.

Kinectrics is the first independent service provider of alpha dosimetry services in Canada.

The Alpha Dosimetry Lab is capable of analyzing both urine and fecal samples to the detection limits required by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and / or by administrative limits. The lab can handle more than 5,000 urine samples per year (approximately 25 per day) for screening purposes during an event or during major shifts in personnel. Several hundred fecal samples per year can be processed for cases which warrant further investigation.

All common alpha emitters (U, Pu, Am, Cm, etc.) are measured in fecal samples with a radiation detection limit of 300 - 500 uBq / sample with a 24-hour count using alpha spectrometer.

Sector-field ICPMS is used to measure Pu-239/240 in urine with a radiation detection limit of 2-5 uBq / sample for screening purposes. Standard response times of 2 weeks are expected. Source term characterization (also offered) is required for dose assignment and modeling.

Licensing by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) is pending and all tests will be accredited to ISO 9001 and ISO 17025.
