Overhead Ground Wires (OHGW) – A Practical View of Mechanical, Ageing and Electrical Aspects

Dates & Locations

Overview

Overhead Ground Wires (OHGW) provide lightning protection and distributed grounding important for safe operation of power lines. OHGW age faster than other overhead components such as  conductors, towers and foundations. This course is designed to provide a practical and introductory view of the fundamentals of the mechanical, ageing and electrical characteristics of OHGW. Participants will learn how conductor motion, such as galloping and sleet jump affects reliability. Test methods and field inspection techniques that characterize ageing of OHGW and their effectiveness for electrical protection will be demonstrated. Asset management of OHGW is more complicated than other components and best practices can include direct replacement, substitution of optical fibre ground wire or no replacement at all.
