Live Line ACSR/ACSS Steel Core Non-Destructive Testing

Expert Assessments to Ensure Reliable Performance

It is important that electrical conductors are safe and reliable. One key factor in this determination is the condition of the steel core of the conductor. Replacement time for the conductor can be predicted based on accurate condition assessment of the steel core.

Kinectrics and Rotesco have jointly developed a device for live line assessment of the steel core condition of the overhead ACSR/ACSS transmission conductors, using a radio-controlled, self-propelled package as shown above.  This device measures the loss of steel caused by corrosion, and can quantify losses in a metallic cross-sectional area with a length as small as two inches.  The device will also provide indications of localized deteriorations in the form of broken steel strands and corrosion pitting.

Kinectrics and Rotesco are currently working to extend the device’s capabilities to include the detection of broken aluminum strands in overhead ACSR transmission conductors.
