Industrial fouling
Unchecked fouling of intake structures and piping networks by zebra or quagga mussels spreading from the Great Lakes into water bodies of central and eastern North America can create serious problems for industrial and municipal users of lake water. Mussel fouling can decrease or obstruct flow, interrupt key processes, reduce heat transfer and impair the response of emergency systems for fire or equipment safety.
Successful environmental solutions
Kinectrics is an acknowledged leader in the development and evaluation of innovative environmental technologies. To be successful, mussel control methods must meet several key criteria:
- Effectively prevent industrial process interruptions, equipment de-ratings and shutdowns caused by mussel fouling
- Ensure that the integrity and availability of safety-related systems is not compromised
- Have minimal impact on the environment
All of Kinectrics’ mussel control techniques have been proven successful for nuclear and fossil generating stations whose cooling and service water systems depend on raw water from the Great Lakes, where zebra and quagga mussels are most pervasive. Kinectrics’ team of biologists, chemists, physical scientists and engineers work diligently to constantly improve these innovative technologies.
Kinectrics’ control techniques include anti-fouling coatings, optimized chlorine applications, mechanical filtration, acoustical treatment, UV applications and thermal shock treatment. Prevention is our focus: if the settlement of veligers (larvae) and the reattachment of translocating juvenile mussels can be prevented, colonies of adult mussels will be unable to establish.
