A New Practical Compact System for On-site Testing

Advanced on-site testing capabilities

The ability to perform on-site commissioning tests on HV XLPE cables is a significant and practical asset to utilities installing such cables. Kinectrics now offers advanced services for high voltage field testing using the only commercially available Resonant Test System (RTS) in North America.

The variable frequency Resonant Test System (RTS) is capable of performing post-installation tests on long lengths of transmission class XLPE cables. This compact, trailer-mounted equipment is capable of testing long lengths of installed HV XLPE cable systems (83 A at 260 kV). The system can be easily configured and ready after a very short preparation time on site.

The  Resonant Test System is also equipped with state-of-the art partial discharge detection equipment to identify incipient cable system flaws.

Ensuring reliability

Kinectrics' Resonant Test System can ensure reliability through testing services that include:

Over voltage post installation high potential tests:

  • Performed by utilities to ensure that the installation of cable accessories has been effected according to rigorous standards and to ensure long life for the cable system by identifying any major deficiencies.
  • Post-factory testing to check for transportation damage and assembly defects.

Partial discharge testing:

  • Early detection of partial discharges during a post-installation test and the elimination of any corresponding flaws discovered in the cable system can help utilities avoid the high energy cable failures that can be experienced once the cable is connected to the power grid.
