Surface Tritium Sensor

Superior Technology for Reliable Tritium Detection

The STS handheld sensor utilizes patented technology to measure tritium contamination on surfaces quickly and directly without the need for any purge gases.

The STS System offers several outstanding features:

  • Measures tritium on surfaces or smear paper
  • Reads total and removable surface activity
  • Lightweight, portable, battery-powered (8 hrs continuous)
  • No P-10 gas, no scintillation waste
  • Performance can be easily checked on a clean surface
  • Fast response <2 minutes
  • ±1 nCi/100 cm2 sensitivity
  • 100 cm2 measurement area

System description

The Surface Tritium Sensor (STS) is a handheld, battery-powered instrument designed for measuring tritium activity on surfaces. The monitor is intended for routine, rapid surveys of surfaces in the field or laboratory, to enable personnel to avoid contact with contamination.

Measurement is easy. Place the instrument on the surface to be monitored, switch on, and read the LCD at the top of the device. The instrument settles to 95% of its final value in less than 2 minutes.

To measure the removable fraction of contamination from any surface, metallic or insulating, simply smear the contaminated surface, place the smear paper under the detector and take a reading. The instrument has a 100 cm2 detection window, over which the activity measurements are averaged.

The STS can be used to examine surfaces for tritium prior to release, for surface activity tracking and, decontamination monitoring.

The STS has a range of 0-7200 nCi/100 cm2 (0 – 1.6 x 106 DPM/100 cm2)

The STS, with a handheld data logger, weighs only 2.7 kg. (6 lbs.)
