Kinectrics and IPH Offer Expanded Testing Services for HV Transmission Class Cables

TORONTO, Ontario, October 31, 2007 - Kinectrics and IPH (Berlin) have executed a co-operation agreement covering the provision of cable, and other testing services in North America.  The collaboration offers utilities worldwide the combined expertise and wide-ranging experience of two internationally-recognized industry leaders in transmission cable testing.

Kinectrics and IPH will share test equipment, facilities, scientific and technical information, and technical personnel for the commissioning of HV and EHV cable systems in Canada, the United States and Mexico. Kinectrics will lead activities in these regions with occasional support enabled by the addition of IPH-owned variable-frequency Resonant Test Sets (RTS) being made available on a project-by-project basis in North America.

This agreement, formalizing previous collaborations between the two companies, means that Kinectrics directly controls at least three RTS systems and can offer expanded capabilities to meet the commissioning and in-service inspection demands of the longest cable systems currently being planned for North America.

Kinectrics and IPH first collaborated on the provision of cable testing services in the United States in late 2006. This highly successful professional relationship rapidly expanded in 2006 / 07 to include cable testing projects throughout North America.

Kinectrics is an established leader in transmission class cable testing in North America and was recently involved in the commissioning of the longest 230-kV cables ever installed on both the east and west coasts of the United States. Kinectrics is currently carrying out commission testing in Mexico and will be associated with the commissioning of a significant cable installation in downtown Toronto, Ontario Canada in late 2007.

Well-known throughout the world with operations based in Europe where it maintains a fleet of RTS units, IPH offers extensive experience in commissioning cables up to 400 kV (test voltage 450 kV). The firm has carried out hundreds of HV cable and Partial Discharge tests, with the longest cable tested by the firm being a 20 km, 400 kV system in London, England. The U.K. project required the connection of three units in parallel and an additional reactor configured in a series (280 kV and 240A) of RTS units.

Kinectrics purchased its first variable-frequency (20 to 300 Hz), 83-A, 50 kV mobile RTS in late 2005 followed by the acquisition of a second unit in 2007. Kinectrics also maintains a preferential agreement for the supply of cable commissioning services in the Middle East - an area that is undergoing tremendous commercial and industrial expansion.
