Kinectrics Inc. and Sensa introduce advanced solutions for power cable applications

Kinectrics is pleased to announce that it has entered into a strategic alliance with Sensa, a Schlumberger Company (UK) to promote and market Dynamic Rating System (DRS) solutions.

Dynamic Rating System technology comprises Dynamic Feeder Rating (DFR) software developed by Kinectrics and Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) equipment manufactured by Sensa.

The new Dynamic Rating System (DRS) combines the benefits of Kinectrics’ and Sensa’s individual technologies to present a significant new advantage for utilities, particularly in the area of high voltage cable management.

• The Dynamic Feeder Rating (DFR) systems component is an important alternative to conventional methods for determining cable ampacities.  The DFR will compute real-time conductor operating temperatures and corresponding real-time steady-state and emergency ratings based on actual cable conditions (measured as cable jacket and soil temperatures and cable current). DFR systems can be used to enhance the current-carrying capacity of power cables and, to eliminate the risk of overheating. They allow utilization of cable systems to their maximum capabilities and are particularly useful when a deferment of costly capital programs is desirable.

• Sensa’s Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) systems are used in the power industry for power circuit monitoring, including buried and submarine cable temperature monitoring.  Sensa’s DTS systems provide early warning of potential problems by identifying the location and temperature of any “hot spots” on the cables. This provides a proactive management approach   to asset condition monitoring that can extend cable life by reducing the risk of overheating, thus leading to improvement in overall network reliability.

The Dynamic Rating System (DRS) gives utilities practical ratings and advance knowledge of critical conditions in advance of those conditions being reached.  The mutual goal of Kinectrics and Sensa is to help clients achieve optimal, cost-effective cable performance. The DRS can be applied to any type of cable installation and the output can be customized to meet specific user requirements.
