Aging structures in an aggressive environment

Much of North America’s electrical generating infrastructure was constructed almost 100 years ago. Many of these structures are now nearing the end of their design life while others have suffered significant damage due to the effects of aggressive environment, operational wear and stresses, and defects in construction materials. Failure of these structures can have serious consequences in the form of lost generation revenue due to unscheduled outages as well as liability issues. Owners need to accurately assess potential problems in their structures to determine effective solutions.

Complete cost-effective service

Condition assessment and engineered rehabilitation of distressed structures minimizes the risk of structural failure and its consequences. Once problems are identified and quantified, rehabilitation options can be reviewed and compared to determine the most cost-effective solution.

Kinectrics’ concrete assessment and repair expertise comprises a complete service from inspection to implementation and conclusion of the repair or reconstruction. Kinectrics offers unparalleled experience in concrete technology, materials testing, construction, and rehabilitation of Nuclear, Fossil fuel and Hydroelectric generating stations across North America. Drilling Investigation, Instrumentation and Rehabilitation

Good concrete should have excellent durability in a variety of environments. However, unresolved problems are associated with its use, including design and detailing, mismatch of materials used in construction and repair, workmanship and abnormally aggressive environments. The serviceability of a concrete structure may be reduced over time by the disintegrating effects of in-service conditions such as weathering, and mechanical or chemical action involving cyclical load, wear, abrasion and chemical attack. These problems can cause significant deterioration in generation plant structures.

Methods to address to these issues may involve in-situ assessment of the structures using both destructive and non-destructive equipment. Concrete coring is the most effective method of defining the extent of damage to the concrete structure and in some cases, the underlying foundations.

Kinectrics has the expertise, experience and state-of-the art facilities to properly assess and carry out reliable, effective concrete repair and rehabilitation.
