Reduce costly in-service testing

Kinectrics offers clients advanced capabilities, to perform type-testing of equipment prior to application or start-up. This proactive approach  helps customers minimize unexpected disruptions and equipment failures, uncover potential problems before commissioning, test settings on an actual simulated system, and reduce the need for costly in-service testing. Using actual system modeling, Kinectrics can determine in-situ protection and control equipment performance results—without the constraints involved in performing live system tests.

Value-added independent testing

  • Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS). Kinectrics offers the only commercially available, vendor-independent RTDS in North America. This allows us to perform unbiased testing of equipment from any manufacturer. Other Kinectrics state-of-the-art tools for comprehensive power system analysis include EMTP, ASPEN, PSSE, and PSCAD.
  • Kinectrics can perform type-testing and product certification for protective relays, control equipment, and communication equipment. We have the capability to:
  • Conduct environmental tests such as SWC, RF, dielectric, fast transient, temperature, and seismic tests according to international standards.
  • Perform static and dynamic testing of equipment to verify manufacturers’ specifications under simulated realistic conditions, or determine individual equipment function results under specified system conditions.
  • Perform studies to assess the impact of new or emerging technologies on power systems (for example, FACTS and special protection schemes)
  • Test the functionality and performance of pre-fabricated relay panels under system conditions.

Specialized  projects

Aside from performing evaluations on relay and control products, Kinectrics has extensive experience in conducting specialized projects including:

  • Design and construction of specialized relay equipment such as 100% stator ground relay, distance relay, programmable logic controller, and battery ground detector.
  • Study the impact of geo-magnetically-induced currents on relay performance.
  • Study the impact of artificial intelligence on power system performance.
  • Studies to determine the impact of series capacitors on existing protection methods.
  • Commercial Grade Dedication work for the nuclear industry.
  • Determination of the need for security of communication on protection and control equipment.
