Small Projects with Big Returns

Small hydro generation is an economically and environmentally attractive energy-supply alternative for new developments in remote communities and retrofit installations on water-control dams.
Kinectrics has the expertise, resources, and know-how to manage small hydro projects from the concept phase through financing to commissioning and in-service support.
Serpent River First Nation Generating Station
This mini-hydro station at Kennebec Falls on the Serpent River First Nation was a cooperative project between Ontario Hydro and the local community. The siphon system was engineered by Kinectrics to make low-impact hydro development possible at sites with aesthetic and environmental constraints.
Cost-effectiveness of the project was maximized as no expensive headworks or in-water civil construction was required. This advantage means many natural sites have the potential for economical "green power" production to meet community needs.
Blind River Generating Station
The Town of Blind River is the site of a long-standing control dam that maintains the water level of Lake Duborne. Flow over the dam was not utilized until this small hydro plant was built into one bay of the dam. Up to 150 kW is generated by two 800 mm propeller turbines that feed energy directly into municipal facilities in the Town.
The plant imposes no changes on the existing uses or control of the river. Small "green power" installations can be implemented at literally hundreds of similar sites where the electric distribution grid passes near a water control structure with unutilized flow.
Deer Lake Generating Station
This 490 kW plant is located beside Shoulderblade Falls on the Severn River, near Deer Lake First Nation. The plant harnesses 3.4 m of head to supply most of the community's energy needs, without impacting the river environment with a dam.
Energy conversion is achieved by two 1200 mm, double-regulated pit turbines. A specially-programmed control system integrates the plant with the town's existing diesel generation system in order to meet peak energy requirements. The project includes a 44kV power line and an access road connecting the plant to the community. Material was shipped to the site by winter road before construction began, and the plant itself was built in one year.
