Project background
Pressure tubes in CANDU reactors are known to grow in length over time due to radiation-induced “creep”. Kinectrics had previously designed a simple and effective tool for accurate measurement of the creep, based on distance measurement to the reactor spotface. The client required Kinectrics’ expertise to reassess and refurbish this tool for continued use.
Scope of work
The work involved conducting a site visit to assess the existing tool condition, and making recommendations for tool component refurbishment where feasible, and / or tool replacement if required.
Work performed
The tools were assessed on site and a need for refurbishment was identified, due to the age and condition of critical tool components
Since direct replacement of the critical component was unavailable due to its age, a comparable replacement was to be identified by Kinectrics that would require minimum modification, if any, to the tool structure. A suitable component was found that did not require any modifications in order to effect satisfactory replacement.
Direct client benefits
The tools were fully refurbished and functionally tested at the site prior to the client’s scheduled project inspection date.
