Candesco Makes Key Contribution to IAEA Nuclear Safety Guide

January 20, 2012

The Candesco division of Kinectrics has contributed to the development of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Safety Guide DS-431 on nuclear Instrumentation & Control (I&C).

IAEA Safety Guides provide recommendations and guidelines for compliance with IAEA safety requirements—which are based on international consensus within the nuclear industry.

Recently, Cam Ngo, a Senior Human Factors Consultant with Candesco, represented Canada in drafting revisions for the Human Machine Interface (HMI) section of the new DS-431 Guide. She also contributed significantly to other sections of this important industry publication, to improve integration of Human Factors Engineering in the design of Instrumentation and Control (I&C) systems for nuclear power plants.

Ngo’s involvement is supported jointly by Kinectrics and the IAEA, and she participated in two key working group meetings in Vienna in 2011. Forty delegates attended the meetings, at which 20 member countries were represented.

It is expected that the final IAEA DS-431 Safety Guide will be approved for release by the end of 2012.
