Visitors were also able to take part in a lab tour, which included viewing the main control room, rectifiers, and other
testing equipment. Guests included Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, Minister of
Energy, Todd Smith, Etobicoke-Lakeshore MPP, Christine Hogarth amongst many
others.
The GridSim Power lab, located at Kinectrics’ Etobicoke
campus was constructed to be a world-leading, independent facility that will
allow manufacturers of renewable and distributed generation technologies from
all over the world to test and certify their products. This state-of-the art
lab is aimed at testing smart grid systems, renewable generation equipment,
traction substation systems and other medium voltage power systems over a wide
range of voltages and frequencies, at power levels up to 10 MVA, and fixed voltage
even higher. The lab can perform testing to UL 1741 and IEEE 1547.1.
Kinectrics understands
the critical need for the grid to be modernized and shift to more flexible
power generation needs and has specifically engineered this facility to cater
to this growing and unfilled need while leveraging other facilities on campus
to become a one stop shop for innovative testing needs. Companies from the US, Brazil,
Germany, Switzerland, and the UK have already expressed interest in the lab.
“We are thrilled to see this laboratory, with
applications across a variety of industries, fully operational.” said David
Harris, President and CEO of Kinectrics. “The GridSim laboratory provides the
ability to focus on testing large inverters, along with other features, to help
the smart grid industry. It is also only one of few labs that can test high
power inverter systems. With our expertise and our staff, we can deliver high
quality services to meet the needs of manufacturers, utilities, and specialized
applications around the world.”
