Toronto, Canada – Bruce Power and Kinectrics have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate in the production of medical isotopes and to further promote Ontario’s role as a world-leader in this innovative field of medical treatment.

In addition to being a low-cost and reliable power supplier to Ontario families and businesses, Bruce Power is a significant global supplier of Cobalt-60, a medical isotope used to sterilize medical equipment in hospitals around the world, to treat brain tumours, and to assist in the fight against cancer.

“We have life-saving technology at our disposal and look forward to working with our partners to innovate in this area,” said Mike Rencheck, Bruce Power’s President and CEO. “The collaboration with Kinectrics will build on our development of Ontario’s Nuclear Innovation Institute and use our collective expertise and industry knowledge to meet the global demand for nuclear isotopes, while establishing a centre of excellence in Bruce County.”

Kinectrics will base its future development activities for isotope services out of its Etobicoke headquarters, and utilize satellite facilities it has established in Bruce County if required. This will build on an existing expertise the company has in Etobicoke and around the province, which supports ongoing operations at Bruce Power, as well as its Life-Extension Program.

“We are proud to be a strategic partner of Bruce Power to help meet this critical global need for these innovative products,” said David Harris, President and CEO, Kinectrics. “By establishing an Ontario-based hub of research and innovation in Etobicoke and Bruce County, we are very excited to be involved in supporting the nuclear sector’s role in health care, and developing more targeted and effective cancer treatments.”

Christine Hogarth, MPP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore, said Kinectrics is a great example of the strength of Ontario's manufacturing sector.

“The announcement will help provide good, well-paying local jobs here in Etobicoke,” MPP Hogarth said. “Thanks to the partnership between Bruce Power and Kinectrics, Ontario will help to ensure worldwide access to life-saving medical isotopes for years to come.”

Kinga Surma, MPP Etobicoke Centre, said the announced partnership between Kinectrics and Bruce Power is a great example of how Ontario is now open for business.

“By leveraging the expertise being developed in advanced manufacturing, Ontario’s nuclear industry will innovate and go beyond energy by providing life-saving medical isotopes for the health community,” MPP Surma said.

Both companies are members of the recently established Canadian Nuclear Isotope Council (CNIC), which advocates for Canada’s continued role in the production of the world’s supply of life-saving radioisotopes. Over 30 leading organizations from Canada and around the world have joined the council, which will develop collective solutions to maintain Canada’s leadership position on the global isotope stage.

This collaboration is in addition to a number of agreements Bruce Power has recently signed to advance its production of medical radioisotopes. The company’s recent announcements with Kinectrics, Framatome, BWXT and Isotopen Technologien München (ITM) subsidiary, ITG signal the company’s sustained focus on providing a reliable, long-term supply of medical nuclear isotopes at a time when the world is facing a global shortage.
